It’s #FeatureFriday time!
As always, our features give us the chance to introduce you to some of the awesome students we have studying at NZIE. It’s a great way to showcase some of the cool things they’ve been up to, and get to know them a little better.
In the spotlight for this week is Tamara Malakhova, co-creator of @sweetasgirls. Not only is she a talented content creator, but she is also an amazingly talented coffee expert. Yep, that’s a thing.
Her love for coffee is what inspired her to start the @sweetasgirls Instagram page.
It’s all about finding the best cafes in Auckland, and showcasing their food and of course, their coffee. Hailing from Russia, Tamara moved to New Zealand to start a career in Digital Marketing.
Although new to the country, she quickly became a local cafe hopper, visiting multiple cafes a day in order to get content for @sweetasgirls. From looking at their Instagram, it was absolutely worth it – her coffee shots are artwork in itself.
We had a chance to chat with Tamara over coffee, and got to know a little more about how the journey of @sweetasgirls began.
How did your idea for @sweetasgirls come about?
“Coffee was always my passion, but I don’t just love my coffee, I’m a visual person too, so I want my coffee to either be in a pretty cup or with beautiful latte art.”
“Back in Moscow, I was taking pictures of my beautiful coffee, truly speaking it was rare due to the lack of high-quality coffee shops. When I came to NZ I was happily surprised with how many coffee places there are here, and I started taking pictures of literally every single cup of coffee I was drinking.”
“Meanwhile, I was trying to find the best places in the city by surfing on Instagram. I have to mention that I am an Instagram lover. While I was Insta-surfing, I couldn’t find any pages talking about coffee and cool cafes around Auckland. That’s when the idea came to me.”
What has it been like creating content for @sweetasgirls?
“Drinking coffee, chilling/working/studying in a cafe is what I love to do and creating content for sweetasgirls is my passion. It’s a process I truly enjoy and am having fun with. I started the project with my friend when we were students and both had a flexible schedule, now it’s getting hard for us to find time to catch up but we try our best because it’s our child and we want it to grow.”
How has the NZIE digital marketing course helped sweetasgirls?
“I would say NZIE was a stepmother for @sweetasgirls child. I remember the Social Media class where I was absorbing every word our tutor was saying as I was trying to apply all the tips and tricks for @sweetasgirls. Also, the Content Marketing class was extremely helpful for us as it helped determine our objectives and target audience.
“And I’m still keeping in mind the techniques we learnt in our Website class to apply to the @sweetasgirls website I wish to create in the future. ”
How important do you think social media is for people wanting to start pages like @sweetasgirls?
“There is no doubt that Social Media is extremely important. We are not just going online from time to time, we are living on the net. Moreover, I believe that Instagram is getting more and more popular in New Zealand and it’s essential for everyone to be on this platform.”
Where do you hope @sweetasgirls will go in the future?
“I want to raise the @sweetasgirls child into a big girl with a highly important opinion, an expert in the coffee industry and influencer to all coffee lovers.”
We’re so excited to see what the future holds for @sweetasgirls. In the meantime, be sure to give them a follow on Instagram to keep up with the best cafe’s in and around Auckland!
