Founder story

Founded in 1994, NZIE was one of the first private tertiary institutions to be accredited in New Zealand. In 2007, Rob Marks, our Managing Director, together with his family, purchased NZIE, and his family now owns both NZIE and MSL Training (which started in 1999.)

From small beginnings to delivering innovation

Back then, NZIE had some international students studying foundation programmes – such as English language courses, as well as business.

Over time,  NZIE launched the Diploma in Applied Business, which was the first Applied Business qualification in New Zealand to have an internship included in the course.  In 2016, we developed our innovative Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Business. Over the last ten years, NZIE worked with local New Zealand businesses and students to deliver 600 internships and research projects.

In 2017, NZIE was a finalist in ‘Excellence in International Trade’ at the Westpac Business Awards for the great work we did in supporting our International students in New Zealand.

NZ’s Largest Digital Marketing Provider

Our team has done amazingly well to bring NZIE into 2022. We’re now the largest digital marketing training provider in New Zealand, delivering the Diploma in Digital Marketing, our flagship programme, plus our Micro-Credentials in social media and SEO.

Responding to The Demand for Digital Marketing

7 years ago, Digital Marketing was very much in its infancy. Through the internship programme, we had over 100 employees within our network. Feedback from these stakeholders uncovered that people were missing the Digital Marketing skill set.

NZIE worked with the industry to put stakeholder feedback together into a cohesive programme, taking all the disciplines of Digital Marketing, from social media to content, right through to analytics and the data. The Diploma in Digital Marketing (Applied) Level 7 as it’s known now was NZQA-accredited in 2015 with our first group of students starting in early 2016. This course is now in its 6th year of running with hundreds of graduates becoming qualified Digital Marketers.

From Face-to-Face to Online

In 2019, NZIE was building a programme around delivering online. We recognised that, particularly for our domestic students, it wasn’t always easy coming into campus as a lot of our students were working. When Covid hit, it supercharged that whole project, and we were delivering 100% online by April 2020. It was challenging at the time – there were a lot of unknowns back then in terms of the pandemic and how it played out. From there we decided that online was the future for NZIE. And that’s because of the demand and feedback that we had from prospective students and industry stakeholders about having this programme across New Zealand, rather than just based at our campus in Auckland.

One of the great things about being online is our ability to teach students living outside the main centres of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The benefit of being online is being able to provide digital marketing training across New Zealand no matter where you live and work.

NZIE’s Teaching and Learning Ethos

Ma te Mātauranga ka Mōhio. Ma te Mōhio ka Tūtuki.

With knowledge comes understanding, with understanding comes application.

The underpinning framework of our programmes Ma te Mātauranga ka Mōhio; Ma te Mōhio ka Tūtuki (with knowledge comes understanding, with understanding comes application), is aimed at meeting the cultural, social, environmental and economic aspirations of Māori and Pasifika students, whilst being inclusive of all students, through Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi).

NZIE uses a holistic approach in its teaching and learning practices, ensuring that all corners of well-being are met so that each student can realise their full potential. Our staff and students have access to an all-encompassing support model to allow them to perform at their absolute best.

As a diverse team, we understand every individual has a unique path to success. That is why we strive to see each of our students as a person, not just a number.
