The aim of the Diploma in Applied Business Level 7 is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to effectively implement and apply advanced analytical tools to business, marketing, hospitality, engineering, and healthcare issues in a dynamic global environment.

Also, the Business Course aims to develop significant ‘real-life’ business context experience in relation to the major studied through the extensive work-based internship learning experience.

Students may select one of the following three major options to study: Advanced Management, Engineering Management, or Healthcare Management.

Applied Business Course Overview

NZIE’s  Business Course offers these THREE majors:

Advanced Management

The Advanced Management major option aims to facilitate students’ understandings and ability to effectively apply Business Process Management knowledge and skills in a wide range of organisational environments. Students targeted for entry to this option will hold a minimum of a relevant diploma in business or a related field at NZQF Level 5 and will be seeking to develop more advanced and applied business management capabilities and experience.

Engineering Management

The Engineering Management major option aims to facilitate students’ understandings and ability to effectively apply Management and Project Management skills in an Engineering environment. Students targeted for entry to this option will hold a minimum of a diploma in an engineering discipline at NZQF Level 5 and will be seeking to develop more advanced and applied management and engineering project management capabilities and experience.

Healthcare Management

The Healthcare Management major option aims to facilitate students’ understandings and ability to effectively apply Healthcare Management skills in a New Zealand Healthcare environment. Students targeted for entry to this option will hold a minimum of a diploma in a health-related discipline at NZQF Level 5 and will be seeking to develop more advanced and applied management and healthcare management capabilities and experience.

Entry Criteria

Career Pathways

Supervisor, Entry-level Manager, Assistant Manager, Senior Supervisor, Department Head, Team Leader and other relevant supervisory and entry-level management positions within an organisation or business in New Zealand or abroad.

Further Study Pathways

Further Study Pathways

Graduates of the Business Course Level 7 wishing to undertake further study may be admitted into NZIE’s Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Business Level 8 and/or other Postgraduate level programmes in New Zealand or overseas, with some credit recognition.

Duration

This programme includes 40 weeks of teaching with a combination of day and night classes and is usually taught over 43-44 weeks including holiday breaks.

* Credit recognition will vary according to individual assessment and NZIE agreements with the partner institutes.

DAB601 | Marketing Planning and Control (Compulsory)

This course evaluates the role of marketing planning and monitoring in relation to organisational philosophy and strategy. So students will gain applied skills and knowledge about the importance of marketing audits, market segmentation, targeting and positioning. Also, they will be required to consider a range of positioning platforms from price, quality, service and brand perception, to establishing an organisation’s positioning strategy.

In addition, the Business Course students will be required to evaluate the important factors influencing organisational buying behaviour and apply these to marketing decisions. They will be required to design a monitoring and control system and recommend ways to improve marketing performance.

DAB602 | Research Methods for Business/Engineering/Healthcare (Compulsory)

This course evaluates legal, ethical, cultural, and industry considerations in the design, implementation and communication of an applied research project. It uses qualitative and quantitative methodologies of data collection, statistical and non-statistical methods of analysis, recent methods of technology in retrieving and processing information, presents findings of research, determines implications of results and makes recommendations for the business/marketing/hospitality/engineering/healthcare management problem identified.

Students will apply the research methods acquired from successful completion of this course to the research project to be undertaken in the 705 Internship or 706 Field Work Research courses.

DAB707 | Applied Management Methods (Compulsory)

This course reviews management context variables in a real-life organisation and in some specific management areas within that organisation. The context analysis conducted would support a new manager to operate legally, ethically and effectively in a specific organisational context. Learners will also identify and plan the managerial strategies, approaches and methods they will use to effect change or developments that will support the organization’s priorities and strategic direction.

Finally, learners will identify and analyse the key capabilities a new manager would need to be effective in one specific area within the organisation studied. Work in this course supports students to develop a framework for efficiently coming into and managing an area in an organisation.

DAB717 | Developing Management Skills (Compulsory)

The aim of this course is to increase the learners’ self-awareness and to gain an understanding of the need to continually develop their capabilities as a manager if they are to have a successful career in what is an increasingly uncertain and changing global environment. In addition, this course will enable the learner to consider areas for self-development and gain an increased understanding of emotional intelligence and how to effectively manage stress and time in the workplace along with the essential elements for making effective oral and written presentations.

DAB718 | Managing Human Resources (Compulsory)

The aim of this course is to enable learners to understand that HRM is a system of interrelated activities or ‘practices’ guided by policies and strategy aimed at achieving an organisation’s missions, objectives and strategies for success. Managers need to view people as a valuable resource that needs to be managed like any other resource if an organisation is to achieve its goals. This course examines key contemporary, applied HRM skills and knowledge including the functions, practices and processes associated with HRM, and understanding the connection between HRM strategy and business performance. Learners will acquire the skills and knowledge a manager is expected to have regarding equal opportunities and managing diversity, current OHS legislation and application, analysing HRM-related problems and applying solutions, and recruitment, selection, and retention practices.

DAB705 | Internship (Compulsory)

The aim of this course is to provide the Learner with the opportunity to work in a New Zealand business or organization for 150 hours over 10 weeks, apply the classroom learning, theory and course content, and further develop their business and management skills and knowledge.

It provides a setting where the learner will undertake a research-based project on a topic agreed between the NZIE Internship Supervisor or Programme Leader, the Internship Provider, and the Learner. The topic chosen should focus on a business-related problem or opportunity. Learners will apply the research skills acquired in Course 602 – Research Methods for Business/Marketing/ Hospitality/Engineering/Health to complete the research-based project.

The Learner will also be required to reflect on the internship experience, and through this practice, identify and evaluate one’s own performance, possible skill and/or knowledge gaps, with a view to improving future performance.

DAB706 | Field Work Research (Compulsory)

The aim of this course is to provide the learners with the opportunity to undertake fieldwork research in a New Zealand business or organizational context and through this demonstrate application of the classroom learning, theory and course content.

Learners will undertake a research-based project on a topic agreed between the Research Supervisor or Programme Leader, and the Learner. The topic chosen should focus on a business-related problem or opportunity. Students will complete this Field Work Research project through a process of inquiry and investigation in a systematic and methodical manner and by applying the research skills acquired in Course 602 – Research Methods for Business/Marketing/ Hospitality/Engineering/Health.

Finally, the Student will also be required to reflect on the fieldwork research experience, and through this practice, identify and evaluate one’s own performance, possible skill and/or knowledge gaps, with a view to improving future performance.
This course may be offered as an alternative to the 705 Internship course.

DAB703 | Business Process Management (Elective)

This course applies business processes and framework to structure organisational approaches to process-centric change. Learners will be able to illustrate the process of designing and developing a business process management solution. They will configure, develop, and manage improved business processes that require information technology and organisational redesign, develop measures and benchmarks for business processes, and illustrate how effective leadership and communication is essential for successful deployment of process management.

DAB716 | Engineering Project Management (Elective)

The aim of this course is to prepare students to resolve issues in engineering projects, deal with issues raised in project teams involved in the development of engineering products and applications. Alongside, students will also develop an ability to use analytical methods, tools and processes to add business value for all concerned stakeholders. Upon completion of this course, students will gain knowledge and skills to manage and complete engineering projects in a successful manner.

DAB719 | Healthcare Management (Elective)

This course aims to explore, analyse and apply the scope, focusses on health care issues, trends and costs associated with healthcare resources. It includes functions and implications of the management and appropriate organisation structures related to a New Zealand healthcare organisation. Also, it includes analysis and understanding of the administrative processes and effects of control in relation to a healthcare organisation.

Students will gain an understanding of the legal and regulatory environment of the healthcare industry, including policy. Finally, learners will explore and analyse past, present and future roles in the mode of communication between consumers and providers within a New Zealand context.

Entry Criteria:

To be admitted into NZ Certificate in English Language Level 4 Academic, all applicants must meet the following requirements:  

a) Be a speaker of English as an additional language; and
 
b) Hold a NZCEL Applied Level 3 [3667] or the NZCEL General Level 4) [1882]) qualification; or 
 
c) Pass an NZIE entry test that meets the requirements for the CEFR B2 requirements or equivalent; and
 
d) Be of a minimum age of 16 years or older; and
 
e) Be a New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency OR Certificate of Refugee Status and evidence of eligibility to study for the duration of enrolment; OR Have a student visa

Entry Criteria:

To be admitted into NZ Certificate in English Language Level 4 General, all applicants must meet the following requirements:

a) Be a speaker of English as an additional language; and

b) Hold a NZCEL Applied Level 3 [3667] qualification; or

c) Pass an NZIE entry test that meets the requirements for the CEFR B2 requirements or equivalent; and

d) Be of a minimum age of 16 years or older; and.

e) Be a New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency OR Certificate of Refugee Status and evidence of eligibility to study for the duration of enrolment; OR Have a student visa.

Entry Criteria:

To be admitted into NZ Certificate in English Language Level 3 General, all applicants must meet the following requirements:

a) Be a speaker of English as an additional language; and

b) Hold a NZCEL Level 2 qualification; or

c) Pass an NZIE entry test that meets the requirements for the CEFR mid B1 requirements or equivalent; and

d) Be of a minimum age of 16 years or older; and.

e) Be a New Zealand citizen or resident; or have Certificate of Refugee Status and evidence of eligibility to study for the duration of enrolment; or have a student visa.
