The great relationship between Think Recruit – NZIE’s Career Services Department – and Bank of New Zealand has been very beneficial for both, students and the bank.
Many of our Diploma in Business students have had the opportunity to work for different departments of the bank during their 3-month internship which is included in their course.
According to Jamie Pendlebury and Nicky Lukar (branch managers), the internship gives the student a chance to come on board, experience hands-on training, display their work skills and demonstrate their ability as an employee that can’t be shown through their CV or even through the interview process.
“Through NZIE’s internship programme, students get a chance to see if they fit the organisation and also find out if they are in the right line of work. They get a prime opportunity to develop relevant skills, even if they still don’t have the skills necessary to apply for a full-time position immediately. They have a lot of energy and want to learn.“- says Nicky
According to Jamie, “the internship programmes are very beneficial to a company as it gives them the tools to assess the students’ performance and attitudes in action, which is almost impossible to do through a conventional recruitment process. “It is a learning exercise for the whole team. Learning to be a team player is an important skill. Best performers are team players.”
Internships give the business an opportunity to find the students’ strengths, carrying out a variety of tasks and seeing where they are best suited.
Last year Nicki’s and Jamie’s branches alone hosted 10 interns and employed 6 of them.
Four students from NZIE’s last group of Diploma in Business are now completing their internships at BNZ. Two of them have already received job offers from the bank.
