Graduates from this programme will be provided with effective and current research-based knowledge, skills, attitudes and the practical experiences to work effectively as innovative ‘thinking’ health project, product or service managers.
In addition to developing skills in management, marketing planning and control, healthcare management and research methods for healthcare management, the programme includes a 10-week internship within New Zealand’s dynamic Healthcare companies.

10 week Internship

NZIE already has study pathways established with a number of other New Zealand based institutions and universities including Massey University, Auckland University of Technology, Auckland Institute of Studies, and Unitec, and with Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia.
The Diploma in Applied Business provides a number of further study options for advanced learning at Postgraduate Level. If students wish to further their studies, they can speak with their Programme Leader who can provide this information
Alternatively, graduates of the Diploma in Applied Business may choose to seek employment in New Zealand on programme completion and can get advice and support from NZIE’s Student Career Service THINK RECRUIT.
This government department funds institutes to accept local domestic students. This means that New Zealanders can study at NZIE and also access the Student Loan and Allowance scheme to support them through their studies. https://www.tec.govt.nz/
Domestic and international students must have completed:
NZQF level 5, or
a 3-year Diploma, or
in a field related to the applicant’s chosen major for the Advanced Management, International Marketing, and Hospitality Management majors; in an engineering discipline for the Engineering Management major; or in a health care-related discipline for the Healthcare Management major.
In lieu of a formal qualification, applicants may apply if they have at least three years suitable work experience. Under this criteria it is expected the work experience be directly related to the field the applicant wishes to major. The suitability of the applicant will be assessed and decided by the NZIE Academic Board.
Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to have an IELTS academic score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5, or TOEFL (pBT) score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE), or TOEFL (iBT) score of 60 (with writing score of 18), or Cambridge English Examinations FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill, or NZCEL Level 4, with the academic endorsement, or Pearson Test of English (Academic) with an Academic score of 50, or City & Guilds IESOL, B2 communicator or with a score of 66. Results must come from one test conducted in the last 2 years.
This course evaluates the role of marketing planning and monitoring in relation to organisational philosophy and strategy. Learners will gain applied skills and knowledge about the importance of marketing audits, market segmentation, targeting and positioning, and will be required to consider a range of positioning platforms from price, quality, service and brand perception, to establishing an organisation’s positioning strategy.
Learners will be required to evaluate the important factors influencing organisational buying behaviour and apply these to marketing decisions and will be required to design a monitoring and control system and recommend ways to improve marketing performance.
This course evaluates legal, ethical, cultural, and industry considerations in the design, implementation and communication of an applied research project. It uses qualitative and quantitative methodologies of data collection, statistical and non-statistical methods of analysis, recent methods of technology in retrieving and processing information, presents findings of research, determines implications of results and makes recommendations for the business/marketing/hospitality/engineering/healthcare management problem identified.
Learners will apply the research methods acquired from successful completion of this course to the research project to be undertaken in the 705 Internship or 706 Field Work Research courses.
This course reviews management context variables in a real-life organisation and in some specific management areas within that organisation. The context analysis conducted would support a new manager to operate legally, ethically and effectively in a specific organisational context. Learners will also identify and plan the managerial strategies, approaches and methods they will use to effect change or developments that will support the organization’s priorities and strategic direction.
Finally, learners will identify and analyse the key capabilities a new manager would need to be effective in one specific area within the organisation studied. Work in this course supports students to develop a framework for efficiently coming into and managing an area in an organisation.
The aim of this course is to increase the learners’ self-awareness and to gain an understanding of the need to continually develop their capabilities as a manager if they are to have a successful career in what is an increasingly uncertain and changing global environment. In addition, this course will enable the learner to consider areas for self-development and gain an increased understanding of emotional intelligence and how to effectively manage stress and time in the workplace along with the essential elements for making effective oral and written presentations.
The aim of this course is to enable learners to understand that HRM is a system of interrelated activities or ‘practices’ guided by policies and strategy aimed at achieving an organisation’s missions, objectives and strategies for success. Managers need to view people as a valuable resource that needs to be managed like any other resource if an organisation is to achieve its goals. This course examines key contemporary, applied HRM skills and knowledge including the functions, practices and processes associated with HRM, and understanding the connection between HRM strategy and business performance. Learners will acquire the skills and knowledge a manager is expected to have regarding equal opportunities and managing diversity, current OHS legislation and application, analysing HRM related problems and applying solutions, and recruitment, selection, and retention practices.
The aim of this course is to provide the Learner with the opportunity to work in a New Zealand business or organization for 150 hours over 10 weeks, apply the classroom learning, theory and course content, and further develop their business and management skills and knowledge.
It provides a setting where the learner will undertake a research-based project on a topic agreed between the NZIE Internship Supervisor or Programme Leader, the Internship Provider, and the Learner. The topic chosen should focus on a business-related problem or opportunity. Learners will apply the research skills acquired in Course 602 – Research Methods for Business/Marketing/ Hospitality/Engineering/Health to complete the research-based project.
The Learner will also be required to reflect on the internship experience, and through this practice, identify and evaluate one’s own performance, possible skill and/or knowledge gaps, with a view to improving future performance.
The aim of this course is to provide the learner with the opportunity to undertake field work research in a New Zealand business or organizational context and through this demonstrate application of the classroom learning, theory and course content.
Learners will undertake a research-based project on a topic agreed between the Research Supervisor or Programme Leader, and the Learner. The topic chosen should focus on a business-related problem or opportunity. Learners will complete this Field Work Research project through a process of inquiry and investigation in a systematic and methodical manner and by applying the research skills acquired in Course 602 – Research Methods for Business/Marketing/ Hospitality/Engineering/Health.
The Learner will also be required to reflect on the field work research experience, and through this practice, identify and evaluate one’s own performance, possible skill and/or knowledge gaps, with a view to improving future performance.
This course may be offered as an alternative to the 705 Internship course.
This course aims to explore, analyse and apply the scope, focusses on health care issues, trends and costs associated with healthcare resources include functions and implications of the management and appropriate organisation structures related to a New Zealand healthcare organisation. It includes an analysis and understanding of the administrative processes and effects of control in relation to a healthcare organisation. Ending the relationship of patients and providers.
Learners will also gain an understanding of the legal and regulatory environment of the healthcare industry, including policy. Finally, learners will explore and analyse past, present and future roles in the mode of communication between consumers and providers within a New Zealand context.
