From production engineering, to farming, to studying a Social Media Marketing Diploma with NZIE, father of five and proud granddad Adriaan van Rooyen proves that fresh starts and new career paths are possible, no matter where you’ve been or where you want to go.
Never Too Late: Breaking into the Digital World at 40
Originally trained as a production engineer in radio, Adriaan’s first major career shift came when he and his wife decided to pursue a different lifestyle for their children.
“We didn’t want the kids to grow up in the city, so we moved them to a farm and started farming. At first, I thought to myself, it’s cows and grass…how hard could it be? But actually, it’s a lot more complicated than that.”
For 15 years, Adriaan continued farming. Until recently.
“Farming looked after us for 15 years, but it had run its cycle. A couple of our kids moved out, and I was looking to get into something I could be passionate about.”
Eager to find an industry that allowed him to express his creativity while offering growth and opportunity, Adriaan turned to digital marketing and content creation. Like many career changers, he worried about returning to study after so long.
“I hadn’t studied since I was 24, so that’s 16-17 years ago. I was wondering what it would be like getting back into learning.”
When Adriaan discovered NZIE’s Diploma in Social Media Marketing, he decided to push aside his concerns and enrolled in the year-long, full-time study option while continuing his farming job. His early morning farming schedule, which finished by mid-afternoon, allowed him to balance both commitments effectively, as the diploma classes were evening-based and 100% online.
Old Skills, New Passions
The transition back to learning was smoother than expected. With a background in sound editing, Adriaan had a natural affinity for video production, and tutor Shay’s class, Video Production for Social Media, quickly became one of his favourites. He appreciated the class’s comprehensive approach, covering everything from scripting and filming to post-production.
“The video production assignment was probably my favourite. I’m also a wedding photographer, so I have quite nice camera equipment, but I’ve never actually gone in and decided to make a proper video with it all. It was the first time I actually took my gear out, put it on the tripod, filmed my ad for the assignment and put it all together. It was really cool.”
Adriaan’s enthusiasm for social media sets him apart, especially within his age group.
“I’m quite passionate about social media in general. I’m one of my only friends on TikTok, and that’s where I spend most of my time. I like, just seeing how it’s intertwined and how everything fits together, you know, it’s interesting. ”
Career Paths and Choices
The Social Media Marketing Diploma has opened the door to exciting possibilities for Adriaan, particularly in emerging technologies.
“The Future Technology class really surprised me. When you actually get into it, it’s amazing to see how far it’s come and how fast it’s moving. If I could just snap my fingers, I would like to be able to freelance, walk into local businesses, and show them what I can do. In reality, I will probably spend one or two years working for an agency to gain experience. Working with various clients and different types of projects will help me develop my skills further and potentially uncover a new passion along the way.”
