Kate Sabatin

Digital Marketer

Looking for your next digital marketing opportunity? Read on to find out how Kate secured a dream role.

Step into the world of Kate, self-proclaimed extrovert and digital marketing specialist at Working In—a visionary company revolutionising recruitment services and paving the way for international talents to find their place in the vibrant landscape of New Zealand.

In this blog post, Kate unveils the profound impact of her experience with NZIE’s Diploma in Digital Marketing, unlocking a world of opportunities that propelled her into her first post-university role.

Studying at NZIE’s Diploma in Digital Marketing

Picture this: Kate, armed with a fresh university degree in Communications, found herself sailing through the uncertain waters of the COVID-19 pandemic, struggling to secure a desirable job. Companies were hesitant to hire new staff, and many businesses halted due to new restrictions and the uncertainty of the pandemic.

“When I finished my undergrad, I had no idea where to go…I did communications, and that’s a big umbrella that can go anywhere,” says Kate.

Then, her parents presented her with the beacon of hope—NZIE’s Diploma in Digital Marketing. Accredited by NZQA, it promised to be the catalyst that would set her apart in the competitive job market. Grateful for her parent’s recommendation, she applied for the next intake after her university graduation and started studying.

Experience During Diploma

Kate found the Diploma to be challenging but stimulating. She was studying full-time and working part-time, which made the workload heavy. However, she had great tutors who guided her. She enjoyed the course, although she struggled to wrap her head around some of the concepts due to the intensity of the content.

She credits her tutors at NZIE, particularly Miriam, Rajika and Lasma, for guiding her through the program.

“Their papers were the hardest too, and they were great. The paper that I enjoyed the most but still need to put into practice at my workplace was Digital Design. I also really enjoyed both the website and the logo making” says Kate.

Kate also describes herself as a “Google Analytics pro” after taking the final paper with Lasma, a skill that’s helped her a lot in her current job.

Her Role In Working In

Kate’s experience at NZIE’s Diploma in Digital Marketing has been instrumental in preparing her for her role at Working In. The Diploma program helped her upskill and stand out amongst other graduates in the communications field.

Her role at Working In involves setting up ads on Google and Facebook, creating ad copy and visuals, and doing targeting. She ensures the ads go live and effectively reach the target audience. Kate also helps with the planning process, working with the marketing team to develop ad copy and visuals.

“I am in charge of setting up the ads on Google, Google Ads, and Facebook,” says Kate. “I also help with the copy and headlines plus visuals. I like going through the planning process of digital ads.”

Kate enjoys her role and finds it a perfect starting point for someone ‘fresh off the boat from studying’. “It’s a really good starting point. The people here are very encouraging, and they always say, ‘Oh, if you don’t know something, I can show you.'”

Her coworkers are impressed with her expertise, which Kate credits to her time studying the craft of digital marketing;

“Sometimes I can’t believe people are complimenting me at stuff that I think is pretty simple. But that’s the thing about studying – if you studied it already, you’ll find it easy. When a problem comes that you are familiar with, you can solve it quickly. But if you don’t study it, it’s confusing for people.”

Her study has paid off, and she has been comfortable in the role, learning a lot each day and increasing her responsibilities.

Upskilling Paid Off

Kate’s experience in digital marketing highlights the importance of upskilling and gaining specialized knowledge to succeed in a competitive job market. The NZIE’s Diploma in Digital Marketing provided Kate with the essential skills and knowledge needed to thrive in her role at Working In, and she continues to grow and develop her skills with the support of her team.
