Career Changer: Retail to Digital Marketing

Meet Sally Franks. After previously working in retail, Sally realised that she wanted to change her career path when COVID hit. Pushed by her fascination for the digital marketing industry, Sally decided to take the plunge and study Digital Marketing at NZIE (Diploma in Digital Marketing).

She now works at Harper Digital in the performance team as a digital campaign specialist. Working with paid advertising, it’s Sally’s job to set up campaigns on Google and Facebook for a range of clients across Auckland and New Zealand.

Study Digital Marketing at NZIE: A Practical Approach

“I would recommend NZIE for its practical approach to studying. I did an undergraduate at Massey which was all theory based, we didn’t learn how to use any tools. However, NZIE was very practical, you learn how to use all the tools that you use in the industry, that’s probably my biggest recommendation for NZIE – the practical approach to studying.”

Sally lists her favourite paper as data analytics, as it turned her fascination for statistics into a career path:

“I had an epiphany that I liked this, and I could do this as a job. I just found it interesting. It’s helped me for my role today as we got taught how to read data and interpret it. That was incredibly useful. Also, just the tools in general, we got taught how to use Facebook Ads Manager, Google ads – I use those daily – plus Google Analytics. And then we touched base a on Google Tag Manager in the Data Analytics course, which I use daily as well. That was incredibly useful.”

Landing a Marketing role at Harper Digital

Upon graduating from her Diploma, Sally was seeking a role in the industry. She asked NZIE’s Client Success Advisor, Jana, to help her improve her CV.

“[Jana] asked me what kind of jobs I was looking for at the time. I didn’t know what I wanted to do. But I said, Look, just get my CV out there and see what happens. Harper Digital was hiring. I got in contact with Harper then I got a call from Juliette. We had a little Google meeting, and then I started maybe a week after that interview.”

Choosing the Right Industry

Sally is confident she has found her path in the Digital Marketing Industry:

“I would recommend the digital marketing industry, there are just so many opportunities, especially with COVID. It’s changed the way we work. We have the opportunity to work remotely and maybe work for a company that’s in Australia or the UK…It’s only going to continue to grow and keep going into a more technological world. There’s just so much happening and there’s something for everyone.”
